Battle of the REDS activated as Man united takes on Liverpool

Liverpool travel to face Manchester United on Sunday aiming to put their disappointing Champions League campaign firmly behind them.

Brendan Rodgers side failed to progress beyond the group stages of Europe's premier club competition, and having disappointing in the Premier League so far this season, are fast running out of excuses.

Rodgers admitted that Liverpool against Manchester United is one of the great fixtures in English football, and said a win at Old Trafford would be a superb response to what has been a frustrating season so far.

Q: "Given the result on Tuesday, does this game with Manchester United take on extra significance?")
"Well it's a very important game, but it always is. It's a massive game on the fixture list in this country and obviously for various reasons it's a game that we go into and we want to do well in. We had an outstanding performance and result last season and if we can replicate that, we would be very happy."

The Reds are currently ninth in the league table, a mammoth 15 points behind league leaders Chelsea.
United are currently riding high, having won five successive Premier League games for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson was at the helm.

Rodgers said consistency was the key ingredient missing in his team, but is hopeful of starting a run that could turn their season around.
