Real Madrid president Perez standing behind Coach Ancelotti

Real Madrid club president Florentino Perez gave his backing to under-pressure head coach Carlo Ancelotti on Thursday (12th March)

Florentino Perez gave his public backing to Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti and his squad on Thursday.

The Italian has come under fire from sections of the Spanish media following recent disappointing performances and results.

Real drew 1-1 with Villarreal and then lost 1-0 to Athletic Bilbao in their last two Spanish Primera Division matches, which saw them surrender first place in the standings to arch-rivals Barcelona.

They were beaten again on Tuesday (10th March), losing 4-3 at home to Schalke in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie.

The defending European champions still advanced to the quarter-finals with a 5-4 aggregate win, but the performance was below the expectations of the Real fans and they made their displeasure known at the final whistle.

Perez told the media on Thursday: "I would like to express unequivocally, the club fully trust the coach and the players," adding: "Whatever happens in the next days and weeks, Carlo Ancelotti will be the Real Madrid coach."

Gareth Bale has come under pressure from a section of the Santiago Bernabeu faithful recently and Perez also came out in defence of the Welshman:

"The only thing I can say is that we shouldn't forget what he was able to achieve in his first year at Real Madrid, for example the two finals he played: Copa del Rey and Champions League."

Perez will hope his words of support can inspire a return to form in Sunday's (15th March) La Liga game against Levante.

However, a greater test of the team's abilities - and their fans' patience - will come a week later when Real visit Barcelona at the Nou Camp.
