Julen Lopetegui : Bayern was too big for us
Porto's 2014/2015 Champions League campaign came to an end on Tuesday
(21st April) when they were thrashed 6-1 by Bayern Munich in the second
leg of their quarter-final match up.
Porto boss Lopetegui described Bayern as " a fantastic team" but was confident that his side would not take long to bounce back.
Porto manager Lopetegui"What happened today was that we didn't play well in the first half. Bayern Munich are one of the best football clubs in the world and the clear favourites for the Champions League. They did a great match tonight and we were not at our very best in the first half. We conceded a goal very early in the match and then we were in trouble. There are hundreds of matches of difference between one club and the other and this experience can be noticed. We didn't get the ball in the first half. When you are playing against a team like Bayern Munich, if you don't have the ball you will suffer a lot. In the second half we were much closer to our reality. We had more possession and played a little more. We could have scored a second which would have put us in the contest again. But in the end we were defeated by three goals difference in the aggregated, 7-4. PSG, for instance, conceded more goals. Last season Bayern lost with more goals difference, so this is Champions. In the end, Bayern won it with three goals more and they are a fantastic team. We didn't have a good first half but in the second we were close to our reality."
The Portuguese had headed to Munich in the ascendancy, having won the first leg.
But needing a 2-0 win, Bayern were level on aggregate within 22 minutes, and three further first half goals effectively brought the contest to an end.
Porto improved in the second half, with Jackson Martinez scoring to give them a glimmer of hope.
But they were reduced to ten men when Ivan Marcano was dismissed and Xabi Alonso then scored a sixth goal for the German side.
Bayern progressed to the final four of the tournament with an emphatic 7-4 aggregate win.
