Diego Costa and Gabriel charged for misconduct

Chelsea striker Diego Costa has been charged by the Football Association for "an alleged act of violent conduct" towards Laurent Koscielny during Saturday's win over Chelsea.

Arsenal defender Gabriel - sent off for kicking out at Costa - has also been charged with improper conduct while team-mate Santi Cazorla has been warned for his behaviour following his red card.

Both clubs have been charged for failing to control their players, with Arsenal confirming they will appeal both the wrongful dismissal and the three-match ban handed to Gabriel.

The Brazilian reacted to Costa prior to the interval, kicking the Spain international, who had clashed with Koscielny minutes earlier.

Costa appeared to strike the Frenchman in the face and was booked for shoving Koscielny to the floor late in the first half at Stamford Bridge - the apparent slap not seen by match officials but caught on video.

Following a review by a panel of three former elite referees, a unanimous decision was reached that the action was worthy of a sending-off offence.

Costa has until 18.00 GMT on Tuesday to respond.

Gabriel has been charged for his behaviour following the red card, with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger livid at referee Mike Dean for failing to punish Costa - describing the striker's behaviour as "unacceptable".

Opposite number Jose Mourinho hailed Costa's display as "fantastic" before the series of unsavoury incidents continued with Cazorla's second yellow card for a poor tackle on Cesc Fabregas in a fiery London derby.

While the issue was the main topic of conversation for Wenger and Mourinho, a host of current and former players also had their say on Costa's display - team-mate Kurt Zouma stating the striker "likes to cheat a lot" before later clarifying his comments.

"English is not my first language & I did not mean to accuse anyone of cheating," the Frenchman posted on Twitter.

Dean's decision to send off Gabriel was backed by former referee Graham Poll, who stated Costa's behaviour merited a ban, while ex-Arsenal centre-back Martin Keown stated the Chelsea man "has a black belt in the dark arts".

Costa has courted controversy since arriving from Atletico Madrid in 2014 - most notably receiving a three-match ban last season for a stamp on Liverpool's Emre Can.

However, Mourinho again defended his forward in the aftermath of Saturday's events, stating: "If you want to speak about Diego Costa with me, he played like he has to play.

"That's why you have full stadiums and the game watched around the world by millions and millions. The game has to be played like that."
