Raul joins New York Cosmos
37 year-old former Spain captain Raul joins New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League (NASL).
New York Cosmos have signed former Spain captain Raul on a 'multi-year contract', according to a statement released by the NASL club on Thursday.
The 37 year-old striker, who scored 228 goals in 550 appearances over a 16-year period for Real Madrid, retired from professional football in April after spending two years at Qatari side Al-Sadd, but has decided to extend his career in North America.
Raul also spent two years in the German Bundesliga with Schalke 04.
Internationally, Raul earned 102 caps for his country, scoring 44 times.
It is understood that Raul is set to take on the role of technical adviser to the youth academy at New York Cosmos, which he will oversee on a full-time basis upon his final retirement.
The New York Cosmos club was originally formed in 1970 and won five titles between 1972 and 1982 in the original North American Soccer League (NASL), before folding in 1985.
During that period, players of the calibre of Pele and Franz Beckebauer donned the Cosmos colours.
A new Cosmos team was unveiled in August 2010 by Pele - now the honorary president - and took part in the second-tier North American Soccer League (first contested in 2011) during the latter part of the 2013 season, winning the 'Fall Championship'.
